Over the last few year's incidents of crime against an individual has risen significantly with 118,221 incidents of violence against a person and 7,701 incidents of sexual crime against a person being committed during 2001-2002 in London alone. Additionally not only have the number of incidents increased but the level of violence associated with these crimes has also risen with a notable increase in the amount of incidents that are committed against women and children. With this in mind it is important that individuals educate themselves as to how they can prevent / avoid situations where they are vulnerable to attack and what options are available to them in the event of an attack.

To help prevent women and children being victims of such incidents AFS have developed a series of self protection programmes that are specifically aimed at women, young adults and children.

Programme 1 - Women's self-protection
The women's self-protection programme is tailored for women over the age of 16 and provides participants with a mix of both practical and technical training covering the following areas:

  • Understanding the key principles of self-defence
  • Awareness & Avoidance - (covering areas such as mini cab safety, staying safe when driving or walking alone, safety when clubbing etc)
  • Fear - Beating the Freeze Syndrome
  • Practical defence skills
  • Defending From the Floor
  • Everyday Items as Weapons
  • The Law & Self-Defence

Programme 2 - Youth self-protection
The young adults self protection course is aimed at individuals between the ages of 12 and 15 years old and is a mix of both practical and awareness building exercises covering:

  • Safety on the street
  • Safety on public transport
  • Travelling to school safely
  • The dangers of the internet
  • Drug awareness
  • Practical defence skills
  • Defending from the floor
  • The Law & Self-Defence

Programme 3 - Children's self-protection
This programme focuses on developing awareness of potentially harmful situations and what to do when feeling threatened. Many of the exercises are done in the form of games to encourage the children to remember what they have learnt through repetition in a fun way. The programme covers the following areas:

  • Safety on the street
  • Safety on public transport
  • The dangers of the internet
  • The dangers of strangers
  • Travelling to school safely
